CCTV (CLOSED CIRCUIT TV)

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is the use of video cameras to transmit a digital video signal to a a control centre, computer or mobile device to monitor a specific are for purposes of security or process control.

The video signals remain within a private network and are not publicly transmitted unlessa uthorized by the system owner. Links between cameras and control area are either wired or wireless, in a point-to-point (P2P), point-to-multipoint or mesh wireless configuration.

CCTV is now becoming prevalent in towns and cities to monitor traffic transgressions, criminal acts and vandalism. Also used for surveillance by banks, casinos, car parks, retail stores, convenience stores, airports, security installations. Factories and manufacturing companies also use CCTV cameras to monitor specific sections of the manufacturing plant for quality control and to alert them of any mulfunctioning of equippment. Also useful to monitor those areas that are not accessible or safe for humans.

CCTV cameras are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and you now get high definition (HD) cameras that can zoom in on license discs on your vehicle from hundreds of metres away,  you get IP cameras, GSM cameras and wide angle digital cameras that allow you to zoom on a specific area being monitored, removing the need for installation of multiple cameras.

CCTV systems may operate continuously,when triggered by sudden movement/light change, or when required. With advances in storage capacity and compression techniques, such as offered by Digital Video Recorders (DVRs), it is now possible to record and store ongoing recording for many years, with a variety of quality and performance options.

The Iternet is now also allowing the use of IP cameras to transmit video signals from the most remote areas of the world for all to see on the web in real-time. A good example of this are the cameras installed on the back of elephants in Africa to monitor their habits and areas they travel through.
