CONFERENCING

A conference call is a telephone call which connects multiple parties together for purposes of conducting business or other meetings via the telephone. This comes with many benefits for businesses, as branches in different towns, cities, provinces or countries can meet without having to spend huge budgets on travel and accommodation costs.

Most conference calls are still conducted in voice (audio) only, over standard telephone lines, but with the advent of the internet and high bandwidth, video/web conferencing is now becoming the conference platform of choice for companies, universities, medical and financial instititutions. Interactive conferencing where people can see, talk, listen and share the data on their PC's or whiteboard is also very popular.

Conference calls can be established by only one party, or the conference call can be announced to others via email or other correspondence with time of conference, number to call and PIN. Interested parties can then call at that specific time and join in the conference. This is usually achieved through "meet me" features on a PBX, or via a hosted conferencing bridge.

BUSINESS TOOL

Businesses use conference calls on a regular basis to meet with remote parties, both within and outside their organisation.

Common applications are customer meetings or sales presentations, project meetings and updates, regular team meetings, training classes and communication with employees who work in different locations (i.e. branches or satellite offices). The main driver for businesses to adopt the technology is for cutting travel costs and allowing employees to be more productive by not having to leave their offices.

A major trend is for conference calls to be used in conjunction with web conferences, where presentations or documents are shared via the internet. This allows people on the call to share computer screens, view content such as business reports, sales figures and company data presented by one or more of the conference participants. When one of the participants presents, the focus of the other participants is on the document that he is sharing on the PC or screen, allowing for all to give real-time comments.
